This course explores ethical issues in physical therapy clinical education and is geared toward physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who work with students in the clinical setting. The course satisfies the ethics requirement for Minnesota state licensure for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. The hybrid course is offered in a two-part series including a 1-hour asynchronous portion and a 1.25 hour synchronous online portion. The course is sponsored by the St. Catherine University PTA and DPT Programs.

Course objectives:
1)        Identify APTA core documents and resources that are helpful when facing a situation with an ethical component
2)        Given a case scenario:
a)        Identify the ethical situation
b)        Identify which principles of the APTA Code of Ethics for the PT and/or Standards of Ethical Conduct for the PTA provide guidance for one’s action(s)
c)        Apply the RIPS Model to establish a sound course of action
3)        Identify 4 ethical decision-making models, separate from the RIPS Model, that lend themselves to use in PT practice
4)        Using a case scenario, compare / contrast the analysis process and outcome(s) when using alternative ethical decision-making models 

Part 1: Asynchronous – to be completed between Monday, September 29 and Monday, October 13, 2025.
Part 2: Synchronous online - Tuesday, October 14, 2025 6:30 – 7:45 pm

This online, asynchronous training will prepare preceptors in the school nurse setting for their role in providing nursing students with a comprehensive clinical experience that supports clinical judgment, skill development, meets program expectations, and encourages a holistic approach to nursing care.
