What does a Behavior Technician do?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works in clinical settings under the supervision of Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) to provide treatment plans for patients like autistic children or developmentally disabled adults. The field is focused on science and human behavior and how to alleviate problematic behaviors in individuals. Behavior Technicians may also work in schools or home settings to assist patients in reducing problematic behaviors or learning daily living skills.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the soft skill expectations of an allied healthcare professional.
  • Provide direct implementation of behavior-analytic services based on the BCBA’s recommendations.
  • Teach children language/communication, social skills, daily living/adaptive skills, pre-academic skills, and more while recording and analyzing data along with the BCBA.
  • Comply with HIPAA/HITECH, OSHA, CMS and other healthcare regulations and laws, including the BACB.
  • Comprehend and define behavior clearly and set a measurement technique.

What You’ll Learn – BT 1000 Behavior Technician and the Medical Office

If you have a love of psychology and behavioral health, a behavior technician role provides a good balance of both. Our Behavior Technician and the Medical Office certification program sets you up to begin your career with the skills to thrive and earn your credentials as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).

Through the MedCerts RBT program, you will learn a series of documentation and protocol rules and regulations that have to be adhered to, not only for thorough records but also according to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) guidelines and HIPAA regulations. You will study a list of subjects written by a licensed BCBA-D (Board Certified Behavior Analyst – Doctorate) and BCBA in order to learn the material needed to test and pass the BACB RBT Certification exam. Both of these are extremely important – this course is offered as part of the RBT training and should be understood prior to taking the BACB examination for the RBT certificate.

Earning the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification opens doors for you to expand your career into medical offices, hospitals, clinics and more. With medical front office administration training, you will be able to understand medical terminology and have a better understanding of the diagnosis of your patients.

You’ll encounter a variety of individuals in the healthcare industry and having training in professionalism in allied health will prepare you to handle any situation that comes your way. Each customer, patient, or client is critical no matter where you work, and no organization can afford to overlook or neglect the power of customer service skills.

In order to become a fully certified Registered Behavior Technician, the BACB requires completion of a 40-hour training and passing a Competency Assessment on the job before being eligible to take the RBT exam. After passing the exam, you’ll be qualified for a number of Behavior Technician related jobs and be responsible for direct contact with patients in various settings. Earning the RBT certification demonstrates your expertise in ensuring the proper treatment of your patients and providing excellent customer service.

NOTE: This training program is based on the Registered Behavior Technician Task List (2nd ed.) and is designed to meet the 40-hour training requirement for RBT credential. The program is offered independent of the BACB. There are additional requirements (outside of training and examination) mandated by the BACB for those on the path to earning the RBT designation. Visit www.bacb.com/rbt for more information.
