The beloved American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the 20th century, Betty Smith's “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” is a poignant tale filled with compassion and cruelty, laughter and heartache, crowded with life and people. 

Anne Daly is a retired board-certified diabetes care specialist and registered dietitian. She served as the American Diabetes Association’s president of health Care & Education in 2001-02, co-founded the Springfield Diabetes & Endocrine Center and finished her career as director of nutrition & diabetes education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Center for Family Medicine. 
Anne is also the mother of three highly successful adult children, one of whom, Brendan, will be the subject of her talk. Brendan has been a coach on six Super Bowl-winning football teams – three with the New England Patriots and three, including the 2024 Super Bowl, with the Kansas City Chiefs. Brendan, a graduate of Sacred-Heart Griffin High School and Drake University, currently is linebackers coach for the Chiefs. 

Mike Murphy has been president and CEO of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the second largest chamber in Illinois, since 2021. He previously represented the Springfield area in the Illinois House of Representatives. Mike spent most of his career in the restaurant business, ending his restaurant career as the owner/operator of Charlie Parker’s Diner. He will talk about how the Chamber works for businesses and helps to ensure the long-term vitality of our community. 

Chautauqua’s spring theme, "Getting to Know Springfield’s New Leaders," continues in May with a program from Lincoln Library’s new director, Gwen Harrison. 

ALL is adding the popular card game Hand and Foot to our activity list. Hand and Foot is easy to learn but still fun and challenging. Our plan is to play on Tuesday afternoons on the opposite weeks from Pinochle. Instructions will be given prior to play on each of the Tuesdays in May. Handouts will also be available. We invite you to check out this new program.

Aaron Berkowitz, professor of history at Lincoln Land Community College for the past 17 years, will be our May speaker. His talk, “The Fall of the Roman Republic and the Rise of the Roman Empire,” is very timely, as Dr. Berkowitz will draw parallels between the Roman Republic and its politics and contemporary societies.
