An introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) which includes the development of receptive and expressive skills in authentic situations and an introduction to Deaf culture.  This introductory course in ASL uses a natural language approach to introduce culturally appropriate signed concepts related to the immediate environment.  Common communicative events and interactions are utilized to acquire a basic working vocabulary and grammar.  The course includes the development of appropriate linguistic/cultural behaviors and awareness of respect for Deaf culture.  Receptive and expressive skills are fostered through interactive ASL lessons without voice.

This 4 day camp will introduce the basics of American Sign Language including vocabulary and key phrases associated with everyday routines like breakfast, and bedtime, school and work related items, and signs used for everyday activities like counting and using money. Your student will also learn how subtle changes in hand movement or hand and finger placement change a word's meaning or indicate an adjective, as well as how the placement of nouns and adjectives in common English varies from ASL.
