Students will be given opportunities to develop oral interpreting skills for escort, consecutive, simultaneous and court interpreting. Participants need to have advanced fluency in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 2213 or certification of skill level through TCC Proficiency Certification exam or approval of instructor.

Learn specific terminology as an educator, how to intervene when cultural issues arise during meetings and communications, legislation regarding language access, remote and in-person interpreting settings, strategies for dealing with difficult limited English Proficient clients and/or service providers, and more.

This course will address the attitudinal differences between the Latino and Anglo-American cultures and how they affect health care decisions. It will increase vocabulary needed to interpret for Spanish-speaking patients by using vocabulary related to illness and symptoms, necessary medical language, and cultural cues. Prerequisite: Oral fluency in English and native/near-native fluency in Spanish, SPAN 2443 & SPAN 2453 with a grade of “C” or better or equivalent or instructor approval. On-site lab required.
